“I’d like to stop by your home and express my appreciation in person. I first began practising this Buddhism on August 24, so how about that day?”

Shin’ichi had noticed a man in his mid-50s in a corner of the training centre, steaming some sweet buns as a treat for the training session participants. It was Motoyoshi. Shin’ichi addressed him: “Thank you for your efforts. I really appreciate them. Where are you from?”

“Just down the hill,” answered the man, though it turned out to be a 40-minute drive by car.

“I’d like to stop by your home and express my appreciation in person.”

Motoyoshi’s face lit up with joy: “Of course! I’m looking forward to it!”

Shin’ichi suggested: “I first began practicing this Buddhism on August 24, so how about that day?”

“On such an important day?” replied Motoyoshi. Motoyoshi’s wife Kazumi, who was standing nearby, said: “Our neighbours in the area all want to see you so badly, they’re praying very intensely. Please meet with them, too.”

“All right,” said Shin’ichi. “I’ll stop by your house, then meet with the others, and we’ll do gongyo together. Your wish is my command.”
