Lawrence Edward Carter Sr. and Daisaku Ikeda shared a connection through their commitment to peace, education and interfaith dialogue.
Lawrence Carter Sr. played a significant role for the American civil rights movement and is known for his work in promoting equality and justice. As the Dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College in Atlanta, he has been instrumental in fostering dialogue on social justice and spirituality.
Daisaku Ikeda, on the other hand, is a Buddhist philosopher, peacebuilder, and educator. He is the founder of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a global Buddhist organization, and has dedicated his life to promoting peace, cultural exchange and education.
Carter also commissioned the Gandhi Ikeda King Hassan Institute for Ethics and Reconciliation in 1999 and created the Gandhi-King-Ikeda Community Builder’s Prize of the Morehouse Chapel in 2001. Carter is an advocate of the work of Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, and has done much to publicize Ikeda’s work in the U.S., including helping to create a traveling exhibition on the life and work of Gandhi, King, and Ikeda (GKI).
It is no exaggeration when he also expressed in an CNA interview (attached video) that one living role model for peace, more than anyone on this very planet, is Dr. Daisaku Ikeda.
Both Carter and Ikeda’s common belief in the transformative power of education and the importance of fostering understanding and respect among people of different backgrounds and faiths. They have engaged in dialogues and formed initiatives that aim to bridge cultural and religious divides, promoting a vision of global harmony and cooperation.
Carter is truly more than just a close friend or disciple to Daisaku Ikeda. This is especially based on his recent posts on his official Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/lawrenceedwardcartersr) and one particularly, which quoted words by Ikeda (though mentioned by latter in 1999), it is as though Ikeda is preparing for his ascension and Soka will only need a President to run day-to-day operations. We are no longer in an age when one should shoulder everything and the future of an organization lies in the hands of everyone working hard for kosen-rufu, and for the victory of others.
