Mr Henry Kissinger passed away on November 29, 2023, just 14 days after the passing of our mentor, Daisaku Ikeda. The meeting of these two influential figures had a profound impact on global peace efforts. One pivotal moment in their interaction occurred in January 1975 when Ikeda Sensei visited the United States and held discussions with then Secretary of State, Mr Henry Kissinger.
During their meeting, Ikeda Sensei conveyed Premier Zhou’s desire to establish a Sino-Japanese peace and friendship treaty. Kissinger expressed his agreement and support for the idea. Following this encounter, Ikeda promptly met with Japanese Minister of Finance Masayoshi Ohira in Washington on the same day. Ikeda Sensei shared Kissinger’s positive response and underscored the necessity of such a treaty. Ohira, who would later become Japan’s prime minister, committed to the realization of this treaty.
The fruition of these efforts came to pass three years later, in August 1978, with the official conclusion of the Sino-Japanese Peace and Friendship Treaty. This historical account highlights Ikeda’s role as a private citizen engaged in citizen diplomacy. His efforts facilitated dialogue and played a crucial role in easing tensions between major nations during a critical period in global geopolitics.
Henry Kissinger, a statesman, diplomat, and Nobel winner, has left an indelible mark on the pages of history. The mutual belief and support between Henry Kissinger and Ikeda Sensei for the end of war and the pursuit of peace showcase the power of humanism between influential individuals in the quest for a more peaceful world.
