Mr Toda defended Mr Makiguchi all alone, accompanying him even to prison and from there carrying on their joint struggle. I also served and supported Mr Toda all alone. I always strove to protect him in all areas and in every conceivable way possible. If people knew what I had been through — the life-and-death struggle that I had fought — it would bring tears to their eyes. No one can possibly imagine how hard it was.​
