“In 1957, in what is known as the Osaka Incident, I was arrested on false charges of violating the election laws and detained in jail for two weeks. But the authorities were actually targeting Mr. Toda. The public prosecutor tried to threaten me, stating that unless I pleaded guilty, they would arrest President Toda. I knew that my mentor was extremely frail at that time, and if he were arrested he might not survive it. I was determined to protect him, and so I agreed to confess to the prosecutor’s charges and then defend my innocence in court.”
