One day, Mr Toda said to me: “Daisaku, I’m sorry to have to ask this of you, but could you give up your studies? In return, I promise to give you a full university education myself.”
From that time on, I visited Mr Toda’s home every Sunday, and he instructed me in every subject imaginable. Sometimes he would even invite me to stay for lunch or dinner. Mr Toda possessed incredibly broad learning that encompassed politics, economics, law, Chinese literature, chemistry, and physics. Later, Sundays weren’t enough, so for several years he held classes for me in the morning before work started. He poured his whole being into those classes, and I received his instruction with my whole being as well.
The intensive training I received at this “Toda University” made me the person I am today.
