And in a diary entry I made in January when I was 25, I asked myself: \u201cHave I travelled the path of mentor and disciple honorably?\u201d<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

My mentor is always in my heart. When I was inaugurated as the third\u00a0<\/span>Soka<\/span>\u00a0Gakkai president; when I took my first step in worldwide\u00a0<\/span>kosen-rufu<\/span>; and each time I faced storms of criticism \u2014 my mentor was ever present in the depths of my life.<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings,\u00a0<\/span>Nichiren<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Daishonin<\/span>\u00a0states:<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

When teacher and disciples have fully responded to one another and the disciples have received the teaching, so that they gain the awakening referred to where the [Lotus] sutra says, \u201cI took a vow, \/ hoping to make all persons \/ equal to me, without any distinction between us\u201d [LSOC2, 70], this is what the sutra calls \u201ccausing living beings to awaken to the Buddha wisdom\u201d [cf. LSOC2, 64]. (OTT, 30)<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n
