Honorary Chairman Ikeda is considered \u2018the last close friend of the generation that experienced war\u2019. Japanese intellectuals who witnessed the horrors of militaristic war were the largest force supporting the peace constitution after the war, and he was one of them. They are different from the post-war generation, including former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who did not experience war. During his lifetime, Honorary Chairman Ikeda said, \u201cKorea is a country of cultural generosity to Japan,\u201d and taught Japanese students about great Korean figures such as King Sejong, Yi Sun-sin, Yu Gwan-sun, and Ahn Chang-ho. He also argued that Koreans living in Japan should be given the right to vote.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During his lifetime, he wrote in Hwagwang Shinmun, the organ of SGI, that \u201cToyotomi Hideyoshi\u2019s dispatch of troops to Japan (Imjin War; Japanese invasions of Korea (1592\u20131598)) was an invasion that trampled on the cultural blessings received from Joseon\u201d and \u201cJapan can achieve peace by establishing friendship with Korea, respecting Korea, and learning Korea\u2019s heart.\u201d We can move in the direction of prosperity,\u201d he wrote. He was attacked by the Japanese right wing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The deceased, who was recognized for his contribution to building bridges between Korea and Japan, received a national medal (Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit) from Korea in 2009. He proposed the institutionalization of six-party talks to improve inter-Korean relations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>He is also famous for his conversations with global intellectuals such as British historian Arnold Toynbee. In the 1970s, he published a collection of talks with Dr. Toynbee, \u2018Dialogues Opening the 21st Century,\u2019 and in the mid-1970s, when the Cold War reached its peak, he also had talks with Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and former Soviet Union Secretary General Nikita Khrushchev. Since then, he has had conversations on the topic of \u2018peace\u2019 with leaders from various countries, including Mikhail Gorbachev (former Secretary-General of the Soviet Union), Hu Jintao (former President of China), and Kofi Annan (former Secretary-General of the United Nations), and has published over 70 books in this way. He was also considered a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n
