The only way for the disciple to respond to the mentor’s profound expectations is to be firmly resolved to advance with a stand-alone spirit.
Instructing me in one of the golden rules of leadership, Mr Toda said to me: “You cannot become a source of a powerful forward momentum unless you always strive to be strict with yourself and compassionate and broad-minded toward others.” I was frequently scolded by him during this period. Mr Toda would reprimand me if I was slow in reporting to him on some development, or take me to task for the steps I had taken in response to some situation. He even used to rebuke me about things unrelated to my own duties. But all of this was a form of guidance motivated by his strict love and concern; it was his way of teaching the youth division to take full responsibility for kosen-rufu.
The only way for the disciple to respond to the mentor’s profound expectations is to be firmly resolved to advance with a stand-alone spirit. You, my comrades of the youth division, too, please rise resolutely to take full responsibility for winning in the struggles for kosen-rufu in the place where you are right now! Rush to assist your friends in those areas that are facing intense challenges for the sake of the Law, and strive to find a way to turn things around and win!
