The “Emerging from the Earth” (15th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra—which precedes the “Life Span” chapter—indeed depicts a magnificent and stirring dialogue between mentor and disciples. This is the realm of the essential teaching of the Lotus Sutra, which is of a very different nature from the theoretical teaching [of the preceding 14 chapters]. The widespread propagation of the Law cannot be carried out in the evil Latter Day by disciples who are dependent on their mentor’s support, protection, and encouragement. At such a time, true disciples who can support, protect, and champion their mentor must stand up. This is the essence of the Soka mentor-disciple relationship!​
