When Mr Toda passed away, the Japanese media and general public alike showered him with criticism and derision, and sneered that the Soka Gakkai would probably fall apart. Even the top leaders of the Gakkai who should have risen up to defend their mentor and protect the organisation were despondent and passive. They had grown so used to sheltering behind Mr. Toda that they had no sense of responsibility as leaders.  I strongly urged that we follow the lessons of our mentor—in other words, that we go on the offensive, not let wrongs go unchallenged, and press forward vigorously and positively.
